Schools Spectacular remixed for television

Relive memorable acts and performances from the past four years in a special televised Schools Spectacular event.

The annual Schools Spectacular, cancelled this year due to the pandemic, will entertain audiences with a special television broadcast next week.

The Schools Spectacular 2020 Remixed will air on Channel 7 on Saturday 5 December at 7pm.

The two-hour broadcast will feature memorable acts and spectacular moments from the past four years.

The show will also feature a surprise digital performance from this year’s graduating Class of 2020 with the Year 12 students sharing their passion and talents while celebrating with NSW Education for one last time.

This technical feat aims to inspire audiences as more than 70 dancers, singers, instrumental musicians and signing performers from across NSW assemble virtually for the performance.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, said this event is an opportunity to revisit memories of past performances and celebrate the talents of students in NSW public schools.

“Schools Spectacular 2020 Remixed will be an extraordinary broadcast and a unique opportunity to look back at some of the many achievements of our talented performing arts students and their hard working and committed teachers from the past four years,” he said.

Audiences can also share their own memories and see highlights from past Schools Spectacular performances on the Schools Spectacular Facebook page.

Schools Spectacular Remixed 2020 is produced by the NSW Department of Education and proudly supported by Presenting Partners, Telstra and the NSW Teachers Federation, and Segment Partner, RØDE Microphones.

Join in the virtual NAIDOC Week celebrations

Education celebrates NAIDOC Week 2020 (8 – 15 November 2020) with the theme ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’.

It’s a time to reflect and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the First Nation peoples – recognising them as the traditional owners of the land.

Schools were invited to film and submit videos to celebrate history, culture and achievements of past and present Aboriginal and Torres Strait students.

Secretary, Mark Scott will give an opening address on Monday, 9 November and then Aboriginal students run a Question and Answers session with Mark Scott, Cindy Berwick, President of the NSW AECG; Martin Graham, Deputy Secretary; Michelle Hall, Executive Director, Connecetd Communities and Karen Jones, Executive Director, Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships.

Tuesday will showcase how NSW public schools are embedding Aboriginal cultural practices. Special thanks to; Windale Public School Preschool, Terrigal Public School, Wilcannia Central School and Murrumbidgee Regional High School for participating.

Wednesday will highlight the outstanding achievements of Benson Igua Saulo, In-coming Consul-General to the US based in Houston (2021), as his is interviewed by current students from his former schools, Tamworth High School and Peel High School.

Thursday will see Uncle Michael Jarrett deliver a Gumbaynggirr language lesson.

Friday will close out our virtual celebration with a beautiful virtual choir led by Uncle Archie Roach. Students will join him singing ‘Took the children away’ and ‘Children came back’.

Join the virtual celebration via video streams hosted by Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships , each weekday morning, at 9:30am, during NAIDOC Week 2020.

2021 term dates now available

Most students start Friday 29 January (or Friday 5 February for Western division) in Term 1 2021.

To support a strong start to 2021, school staff will now have two school development days at the beginning of Term 1.

For 2021, students will return to school on Friday 29 January (or Friday 5 February for Western division), unless otherwise notified by the school. School term dates for 2021 are now available.

Western division schools, also known as ‘late start’ schools, are located in the far western region of NSW. Check if your school is a Late start school.

Have your before and after school care needs changed?

Updates to COVID-19 restrictions affecting NSW schools

Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW

NSW Health has a website to inform you of the actions you should take if you have been in a location where there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 within NSW. Monitor the site and follow the relevant health advice if you have been at any of the locations at the specified dates and times.

Students and staff who have travelled through or visited Victoria

All students and staff who have visited Victoria must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Except for students and staff who reside in a border town, all students and staff who have visited Victoria in the 14 days before the commencement of school should not attend school until they complete the 14 days self-isolation period since they left Victoria.

Students and staff who are unable to return to school due to these self-isolation requirements will be supported to learn and work remotely during the self-isolation period via the online learning hubs until they return to on-campus learning and teaching.

NSW Health has requested anyone who has been in Victoria and is unwell or has flu-like symptoms arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Information for students and staff on new NSW-Victoria border restrictions

The NSW Government has announced further tightening to the restrictions for people travelling across the NSW-Victorian border.

From midnight Tuesday 21 July a border zone, defined along the Murray River, will be established.

Anyone travelling from Victoria to NSW must apply for a new permit through Service NSW.

Victorian residents who have been in one of the restricted areas in Victoria in the last 14 days must not enter NSW.

Attending schools along the border

Current permits will expire at midnight, Tuesday 21 July. We strongly encourage all parents and staff to check they have a permit and if not, apply for one through Service NSW.

Students and staff who reside in Victoria will need to be eligible for a border permit to attend school in person.

Under the new public health order, the border zone has been reduced significantly.

Not all students and staff may be eligible for a border permit under the public health order. If you are not eligible for a border permit you will not be able to cross the border. Students and staff will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Further information on the new border zone is available from Service NSW.

Border permits can be rescinded at any time if a cluster outbreak in your community occurs. We encourage parents to monitor local circumstances regularly as things may change in the coming days or weeks.

Transport to and from school will run as scheduled. For travel advice to and from school refer to Transport for NSW.

New restrictions affecting boarding schools

Any student returning from Victoria to reside at a boarding school in NSW must now self-isolate for 14 days in a NSW location separate to the boarding school. They must also obtain a negative test swab from day 10 of their isolation before entering school and have written confirmation of the test result and the period spent isolating.

Those who are unable to return to boarding while they are completing the self-isolation period will be supported through remote learning and working via the online learning hubs until they return to school.

Returning to school in Term 3

Our school will be open to welcome students back to onsite learning from the beginning of Term 3 – Tuesday 21 July 2020.

As you would be aware the border between NSW and Victoria closed as of 12:01am 8 July 2020.

All staff and students returning from Victoria after this time must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to self-isolate for a period of 14 days.

Curriculum reform focuses on deep learning

Changes to the NSW school curriculum will be the biggest education shake-up in 30 years.

The reforms, announced by the NSW Government on Tuesday, will start rolling out in 2021. All Kindergarten to Year 12 students will learn the new curriculum by 2024.

The changes are in response to the NSW Curriculum Review by Professor Geoff Masters and will ensure every student is prepared and ready for their future.

The reforms are based on:

decluttering the curriculum by reducing unnecessary subjects
a ‘back to basics approach’ that will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, maths and science
Year 11 and Year 12 prequalification for university and TAFE courses.

Education Week to celebrate learning together

Education Week 2020 will be held from Monday 3 August to Friday 7 August.

Education Week is our annual week of celebration to highlight the achievements of our students and staff and the role of public schools as the cornerstone of their communities.

This year’s theme is ‘Learning together’ and it reflects the incredible months of 2020 where NSW public school students have continued to learn and achieve, despite natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our schools have experienced significant disruption but our staff – in partnership with parents and carers – have worked tirelessly to ensure that high quality teaching and learning has continued for all students.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the best learning takes place when there is a partnership of students, teachers, parents, carers and the community.

“Our schools and families benefit from strong, respectful relationships where responsibility for student learning is shared,” Mr Scott said.

“As our lives slowly return to normal, it’s time for us to reflect on the achievements and resilience of our entire school community. We look forward to celebrating Education Week with all of you in August.”

Statewide events for Education Week include:

a live stream launch on Monday, 3 August
activities for National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day on Tuesday, 4 August
a live streamed student film festival on Wednesday, 5 August.

NSW students return to the classroom full-time

Students across NSW will be back in the classroom full-time from next Monday, 25 May.

The success of the phased return to face to face teaching has demonstrated the education system and community are ready for school to come back full-time.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell thanked school communities and parents for their patience during this difficult time.

Ms Berejiklian said a return to full-time face to face teaching and learning is crucial for the education progress of every child in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

“Since starting a managed return to the classroom, we have seen a strong degree of confidence from our school communities in managing COVID-19 and a clear desire for all students to be back at school,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We expect schools to stick with the health advice – increased cleaning, access to hygiene supplies and compliance with hygience practices – and look forward to seeing all students back on campus five days a week.

“The health advice is very clear; a return to full-time face to face teaching is safe.”

Over the last two weeks schools have been working hard to support students practise good hygiene and implement new routines at school, which has been successful giving the community confidence that full-time face to face teaching can resume.

Ms Mitchell said she was eager to see students back in the classroom full-time.

“Our principals, teachers, support staff, parents and carers have gone above and beyond to continue the education of our students while we respond to this pandemic,” Ms Mitchell said.

“My priority is the education of our children. We know that parents across NSW share our desire for students to be back in school, and that is our expectation.

“Schools will need to maintain the measures and precautions they have put in place for the foreseeable future, including no assemblies and excursions.

“Teachers will be focused on identifying where their students are at in their education and we will be supporting them to recognise and assist those students who need additional help.”

Help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community by downloading the app.

Social distancing and washing your hands remain the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The COVIDSafe app, developed by the Australian Government, helps to reduce the spread by allowing health experts to find close contacts faster and more accurately.

The app does not track your location. It uses your phone's Bluetooth to record other users you come into contact with, so if they test positive, NSW Health can let you know.

Students begin return to classrooms

From Monday 11 May (Week 3) students will begin a phased return to school.

The phased return will maintain distancing in the classroom while supporting students' education and wellbeing.

Most students will continue learning from home and will only attend school 1 day each week.

Our school will continue to provide detailed information about the return to the classroom throughout the rest of Term 2.

Measures to keep schools clean and safe for all students and staff include:

25% more cleaning time focused on high-touch areas
priority deliveries of hygiene supplies including soap and hand sanitiser
local school changes to pick up, drop off, lunch and recess times and processes.

Religion and ethics lessons continue at home

Students learning from home can continue to access Special religious education (SRE) and Special education in ethics (SEE) classes.

Face-to-face SRE, SEE and Voluntary student activities of a religious nature in schools (VSA) will not be available until schools resume normal operations.

In response to requests from school communities, SRE and SEE approved providers are delivering their authorised curriculum with modifications to allow students to learn from home from the start of Term 2.

The lesson content and the mode of delivery has been reviewed and modified for easy access by students. The approved providers recognise that learning at home will not replicate face-to-face learning at school.

NSW students to transition back to the classroom in Term 2

NSW school students will gradually transition back to the classroom during Term 2 as the Government continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell outlined the plan for students attending NSW public schools to progressively return to face-to-face learning in week three of Term 2.

Ms Berejiklian said health advice continues to be that schools remain open, and parents, teachers and students can be confident that school is safe place.

“We are grateful to all families who kept their children home from school at the end of Term 1 and to teachers who worked tirelessly to deliver education online,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This allowed us critical time to prepare our schools to develop better online learning options and for considering additional hygiene measures to allow schools to return.

“We know that nothing is more important than a child’s education, and we must begin to return our students to their classrooms in a considered way.

“Under these changes, from week three of Term 2, every student will be attending school for one day a week.

“We will look to increase the number of days students are at school in a staged way and hope to have all children back at school full-time by Term 3.

“I’d like to thank the Catholic and Independent schools for working with the NSW Government at this time, as well as staff, including teachers, principals and cleaners, for working so hard to prepare for a resumption of school.

“I’d also like to thank parents for what has been a tough month, often juggling working from home and caring for children. We hope the partial resumption of on campus learning will provide some much needed relief to those families.”

During the first stage of on-campus learning, parents will be encouraged to keep their children home except on their allocated day of face-to-face learning. Initially, about a quarter of a school’s students are expected to be on site at any one time. The specific days students will be required to attend school each week will vary from school to school and will be clearly communicated to parents.

Classes will be split across schools, allowing schools to appropriately social distance students and teachers.

As always, schools will remain open for students who need them and no child will be turned away from school.

Ms Mitchell said careful consideration had been given to support the school community, providing clarity and certainty on the path forward.

“This plan provides a clear path that balances community concerns with a need to deliver continuity of quality education,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Hand sanitiser will be available in all classrooms and provisions are in place for at-risk teachers to work from home. Drop off, pick up, recess and lunchtimes will also be staggered to ensure social distancing.”

In addition to the staged return to school, the NSW Government has committed up to $95.7 million to help keep casual and temporary school staff engaged in active work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our casual and temporary teachers and other non-teaching staff across NSW schools are critical to our education system, and will help ensure the educational outcomes for our students during this staged return,” Ms Mitchell said.

A cross-sector working group of teachers will also be established to report back to the Minister on recent innovations and educational developments assembled during the COVID-19 period that are suitable to support future educational delivery.

“It’s important that we have an inventory of the cutting edge teaching solutions and recognise the best efforts of our amazing NSW teachers during a difficult time,” Ms Mitchell said.

Teachers will have an additional day to prepare for Term 2 on Tuesday 28 April making the first day of term for students Wednesday 29 April.

No child will be turned away from school

The NSW Department of Education's advice regarding schools is very clear. No child in NSW will be turned away from school.

Schools will remain open for parents who want their children to attend irrespective of their profession or working arrangements.

The decision to keep schools open has been made based on advice from NSW Health, which has not changed.

The department will provide continuity of learning for all students both on and off campus and the Premier, for practical reasons, has encouraged parents to keep their children at home if they could.

Schools will communicate directly with parents on what learning options are available using their communication methods such as the school website, newsletters, emails and other online tools.

New COVID-19 restrictions begin as schools move towards online learning

The NSW Government has taken significant new steps to increase restrictions across the state - triggering the next level of enforcement necessary to fight COVID-19.

Following the decisions made by National Cabinet, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the shutdown to protect NSW citizens.

"I understand many in the community are worried, and these changes will affect everyday lives, and may be upsetting," Ms Berejiklian said.

"But these decisions will make us all safer, they are taken with the health of all citizens in mind, and they must be taken now.

"If you have the capacity to work from home, you should do so."

In line with health advice, from midday today, the following non-essential activities and businesses will be temporarily shut down:

pubs, registered clubs
gyms, indoor sporting venues
cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs
restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery
religious gatherings, places of worship (excluding small weddings and funerals that comply with the 4m2 rule, which can proceed).

It is important to note essential gatherings at places such as hospitals, workplaces, constructions sites and for public transport are exempt and will continue.

As confirmed last night by the Prime Minister schools will remain open, based on health advice, which has not changed.

But from tomorrow, in NSW, for practical reasons, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home.

"Because nearly 30 per cent of children are already being kept out of school, for practical reasons NSW is encouraging parents to keep their children at home," Ms Berejiklian said.

"This will ensure there is only one unit of work, whether the student is at home or at school.

"No child will be turned away from school."

Schools to implement distancing measures

The NSW Department of Education is introducing proactive measures to limit the impact of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in our schools.

Mark Scott, Secretary of the Department of Education, today announced that schools would adopt social distancing measures requiring them to cancel assemblies, excursions, travel, some events and conferences.

Mr Scott said these measures are precautionary and designed to reduce exposure via non-essential gatherings.

"Schools have been a focus of the community and the government as the impacts of coronavirus have developed globally," Mr Scott said.

"From Monday onwards, I expect school assemblies and substantial gatherings to be cancelled, along with all excursions.

"The community expects schools to be as safe as possible. We are implementing these measures to provide peace of mind for students, parents and staff."

"These cancellations also extend to inter-school arts, sports, initiative activities and events.

All major arts, sports and initiative activities and events will temporarily be ceased until further notice. This includes whole-school sporting events and inter-school events involving three or more schools.

"Local inter-school sport and other activities can proceed, but we ask organisers to ensure that as far as possible, reasonable precautions are taken," Mr Scott said.

"I trust our principals and staff to show leadership during this time."

Schools will be provided with more detailed advice and suggestions on how they can adjust their day to day activities with minimal disruption.

The department is continuing to prepare for further closures if necessary with scaling up of technology, additional training of staff and preparation of offsite lessons.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Thanks you to all the students, parents and staff who have helped make my time at Connells Point so special. I have appreciated and valued the hundreds of friendships that I have made during this time and will treasure the memories forever. Thank you for trusting me with your most precious possessions and allowing me to be a part of your child's schooling, development and life.

I have loved being part of Stages 1, 2 and 3 and getting to know each and every child in the school. I enjoyed seeing the students shine through all 10 Showcases, discos, camps, training PSSA teams and managing the school ICT.

It certainly does take a village to raise a child and I thank my colleagues for their support and advice. You are very lucky to be a part of such a community, with such dedicated staff who genuinely care for your children.

Thanks again for your support and well wishes. After over 11 years at CPPS I will be taking on the substantive Assistant Principal role at Peakhurst South Public School, starting Term 3. However, I am sure that you will still see me around the school, IGA, soccer or Halloween!

Debating Grand Final

Last week the Connells Point Debating Team A participated in the Sydney Primary School's Debating Competition Grand Final. The team debated against Beverly Hills Public School. The topic was that Organ Donation Should Be Compulsory. The team debated the affirmative for this topic.

The team conducted themselves with poise and maturity, both with their arguments and rebuttals, however, they unfortunately were not successful in winning the competition. This means they are 2nd from 76 teams, which is a fantastic effort.

Every year staff are involved in ongoing professional development. This occurs on Wednesday afternoons, pupil free days and once a year on a Saturday. For this year's Saturday Staff Development day, Connells Point Public School staff came together with two other local schools and were fortunate to have a guest speaker attend, Steve Francis. Staff gain a lot from these sessions and use this knowledge to support students in their learning.

Lawn bowls in the St George Leader

This week saw the students of Connells Point Public School and the members of the local bowling club feature in the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.

Primary School Pupils Take up Lawn Bowls

It may not be the fastest-paced sport in the world, but lawn bowls has been given the thumbs up from pupils at Connells Point Public School.

Every Friday morning, Connells Point Public School takes a group of about 20 pupils down the hill to Blakehurst Bowling Club. The school started the tradition this year and has not looked back.

"I initiated it as a community event and the guys came on board at the bowling club and voluntarily do it – they don't charge us anything. They have been brilliant," teacher Laura Power said.

"I wanted to initiate something new for the students to experience. We are always looking to expose them to new sports."

She said some of the pupils were skeptical at first but have since come to realise the grass was in fact greener at the bowling club.

"At first some of the kids were like ‘do we have to go' but now they are like ‘can we go'. They love it and are really enthusiastic about it," she said.

"And what we've found is the children that are not traditionally good at sport are succeeding, because you don't have to run or jump you have to think."

She said a big thank you to the club chairman Wal Chin for helping run the event each Friday and to the other volunteers at the club.

Every four or five weeks the school rotate another group of 20 pupils, in Years 3 to 6, to try lawn bowls.

Biggest morning tea

On Thursday 25th May the Connells Point Public School community came together to celebrate the Biggest Morning Tea. The students brought something to share with friends and family and had a picnic on the oval. The students also generously donated a gold coin which went towards much needed money for cancer research at the Cancer council. The weather was beautiful and everyone had a wonderful day.

Of course our presentation day recognised the outstanding achievements of students in literacy, numeracy, sport and the performing arts. The dux of the school was announced, as were the student leadership team. We are proud of our achievements at Connells Point public school and it was fantastic day to recognise the hard work of our students.

Connells Point Public School has a diverse range of cultures. We celebrated these on Thursday 3rd November as part of Diversity Day. Students shared stories about their heritage and shared food from their heritage as a way for students to learn more about other cultures. 2016 was the inaugural year celebrating Diversity Day. We had a fantastic African presenter who shared her passion knowledge about Africa the continent and flags, culture and history. Greek dancers shared a few traditional dances with the students and guests.

On Thursday 15th September Connells Point Public School hosted the Regional Spelling Bee. Four of our students competed, two in both the junior and senior divisions, Ethan P and James Law and Grace W and Kate L, respectively. competition was tough in both the senior and junior divisions. With the juniors, it was a nail biting few rounds to decide the runner up. Well done to all our competitors!

To support students in their reading, we are using Wushka Literacy with is a Levelled Reading Program.

Wushka is a cloud based reading program, developed using decades of educational publishing experience, which helps students learn to read. The extensive selection of fiction and non-fiction levelled school readers are stored in Wushka's coloured reading boxes. Teachers are setting reading levels for their class based on their ability level. We encourage you to explore this fantastic program with your child.

Book Week Parade - Start thinking of a character!

Each year, we bring children and books together to celebrate Book Week. This years Book Week Parade will be held on Thursday 25 August at 10am. We look forward to seeing your amazing costumes based on book characters. We encourage you to carry the book that you used as inspiration in the parade. Connells Point would like to invite all parents and friends to join us on the day and watch the parade. The theme of this years Book Week is ‘Australia! Story Country'. The P & C will be selling tea and coffee and you can stay and have recess with your children.

This year we will be introducing a book swap in the school library. Students can bring in three books that they have read or that are no longer suitable for their age group. The books need to be in good condition, with no torn pages or writing on them. For a gold coin donation, the students can pick three new books that they get to take home and keep as their own. We encourage students to bring in all types of books including novels, picture books, fiction and non-fiction.

The money that we raise will be donated to The Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The ILF is a national charity that aims to improve children's literacy levels in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. New Playground Behaviour Levels

The Connells Point Playground Behaviour Policy has recently been updated. The new format makes the behaviour levels and consequences more clear for all of our students. All classes have discussed the new behaviour levels and posters have been put up in each classroom. Although we rarely have issues at our school, it is important that the students are aware of the escalating behaviours and associated consequences. We encourage you to discuss with your child, the high expectations that we hold for all students at our school.

Connells Point Public School

Mural 2016

A new mural has been completed at Connells Point Public School thanks to Mrs Jessup. Jenni Jessup has taught at the school for over 20 years. She is a talented artist and an extremely dedicated teacher. She was approached by the Principal (Mrs Therese Corben) to complete a mural that was bright and had an Indigenous theme.

The artwork was influenced by Sally Morgan one of Australia's best known Aboriginal artists and writers. Sally's paintings tell the story of her people, their land and history. The mural which is approximately 50 metres long depicts the Georges River, which encloses Connells Point.

The mural took over one year to complete, including many school holidays and weekends. Over 500 students added a fish to the mural, as did the Minister of Education (the Honourable Adrian Piccoli) who visited last month. Staff and students would like to thank Mrs Jessup for her commitment to education and amazing artwork that will be enjoyed for many years to come.

On Friday 17th June students at Connells Point Public School participated in a Walkathon. Although the weather interrupted K-2 students, it didn't dampen their spirits. The final amount raised by our very generous family and friends will be well used to enhance our students' learning.

Stage 2 Quarantine Station Excursion

Kids in quarantine introduced students to the concept of quarantine, and the history of the site, particularly in light of newly arriving migrants to Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries.

First contacts, ship travel, migration, treatment of diseases, segregation based on class and race were a few of the topics covered on the day.

The students gained a lot from the excursion.

Premiers Spelling Bee

The Premier's Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage in spelling. The program includes activities to encourage all students to engage with spelling and to promote improved literacy in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus.

On ANZAC Day, we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.

Connells Point Public School commemorated ANZAC Day by holding a whole school assembly where parents were invited to attend. The School Leadership Team also represented our community by laying a wreath at the South Hurstville RSL Dawn Service.

Connells Point Public School celebrated Harmony Day, where we recognise diversity in our community. We discussed where people's families in our school had come from and how migration has brought positive change in Australia.

Thank you to all the students who participated in our Harmony Day activities, our staff who organised them, and our parents and families who attended our assembly today.

We think that people are more the same than they are different. As one of our Stage One students said, "We are like a box of crayons. Each one is unique but when we get together, the picture is complete."

School Council plays an important role in partnering with the Executive and Teaching Staff of our school together with the P&C Association in seeking to continually improve the education of our young people

The School Council comprises the Principal, 3 school staff representatives, 3 parent representatives, a community representative and the President of the P&C.

The role of the School Council is primarily concerned with determination of school policy. This includes such things as determining the aim and educational goals of the school, identifying local educational needs and priorities, assessing the school's financial needs, establishing policies for community use of school facilities, assessing the needs of the school from time to time in areas such as buildings, grounds, facilities, school transport, starting/finishing times and matters which could affect neighbouring schools.

The Council meets a minimum of five times throughout the course of the school year.

Any parent, guardian or person who has actual custody of a student currently enrolled at Connells Point Public School is eligible to be nominated for parent representative.

Procedure for Parent Nomination

Nominations are to be submitted by Friday 27^th November, in writing on the form provided and placed in the box in the school office, or by email to Janet Angus, President School Council, angusje@tpg.com.au.

Each nominee must be PROPOSED and SECONDED by a parent, guardian or person who has actual custody of a student currently enrolled at Connells Point Public School.

The nominee must sign the nomination form indicating a willingness to accept the nomination.

Procedure for Election of Parent Representative (if required)

If more than one person is nominated, the Principal will ensure that an election is conducted so that all members of the parent/guardian community have a reasonable opportunity to vote for their representative.

The election will take place within ten school days of the closure of nominations. All votes are to be in writing by a parent, guardian or person who has actual custody of a student currently enrolled at Connells Point Public School.

Votes are to be placed in a sealed election box at Connells Point Public School.

Votes are counted by an Executive Member of the School Council (Principal, President of School Council, or Secretary of School Council) and the President of P&C.

Names of successful candidates will be published in the school newsletter.

Spelling Bee 2015 - The Buzz

Connells Point Public School has enrolled in the Premier's Spelling Bee for 2015. This is a valuable opportunity for students to challenge their spelling prowess individually, within grade groups and at a higher stage level.

In order to ensure that all children have a fair and equitable chance to perform in the lead up to the selection process, we encourage all children to take part in the grade selection.

In the first instance, each grade will conduct a mini spelling bee in order to select the top 15 spellers in the grade. This will take place in Week 7.

These 15 finalists will then compete at a stage level in Week 8- Junior (Stage 2) and Senior (Stage 3). A winner and runner up from each competition will be determined. They will then go on to represent the school at the regional final on Thursday 10th September (Week 9) at Connells Point PS.

Congratulations to the students from Connells Point who represented our school in the Port Hacking (Pool P) Final of the Southern Sydney Public Speaking. Our students delivered the following speeches:

I would like to also thank the prefects, timekeepers and chairpersons, who represented our school to a high standard. Many people from other schools commented on our beautiful facilities and the great manners of our prefects, who directed people to the correct venue.

Congratulations to all of the students who took part in the 2015 Bandfest, held in the St George Auditorium in Kogarah. All of the students played extremely well, under the guidance of our conductor Mr Kevin Skues. We are very proud to announce that both our Junior and Senior bands achieved a gold medal. The Performing Band were awarded a silver medal. Congratulations to all of the bands on an excellent performance.

District Cross Country

Congratulations to the students who participated in the Georges River District Cross Country on Thursday 21st May at Gannons Park. Our school team ran very well, placing 4th out of the 16 schools represented.

Two of our students will progress to the Sydney East Carnival on 11 June after placing in the top six of their age group (with 64 competitors in each race). Well done to Aya (4th in 11 girls) and Lachlan W (6^th in 11 boys). A special mention to the following students who placed in the top ten and are reserves for the next competition: Tiana G (7^th in 12/13 girls), Jasmine (8^th in 12/13 girls), Noah A (10^th in 10 boys), Kyla (10^th in 10 girls), and Shiori (10^th in 8/9 girls) - fantastic effort!

Term 2 Begins!

Term 2 will begin for students on Tuesday 21 April. Staff will be attending a staff development day on Monday 20 April and the school office will be open from 8:30am for any enquiries.

A reminder that, the Athletics Carnival for Years 3-6 will be held at Sylvania Athletics Track, Belgrave Esplanade, Sylvania Waters on the first day of term. Students are expected to wear sports uniform or house colours (with a hat). Students will need to be at school by 8:30am for buses to depart at 8:45am.

I am pleased to announce that Ms Therese Corben has been successful through a merit selection

process for the position of Principal at Connells Point Public School. This appointment is subject to a

Ms Corben is of course known to you for her outstanding work as Deputy Principal and in 2014 as

Relieving Principal.

Ms Corben comes to this position as a highly regarded educator and leader. Her expertise in

curriculum and student wellbeing has been developed through her work as a Literacy Consultant for

schools across Sydney and also as an Assistant Principal Learning Assistance.

Ms Corben is a passionate, committed educator and she will undoubtedly build upon the many

Junior Band On Tour...

Well done to the Junior Band who entertained three preschools with their Christmas Carols and extensive repertoire this week. We visited St Marks Preschool, South Hurstville Preschool and Hurstville Grove Preschool. All of the children enjoyed learning about the instruments and the sounds that make up a concert band.

Some of these pre-schoolers are attending Connells Point next year, and were happy to meet students from their BIG school. Our thanks must go to Mr Skues and all of the students who were not only talented, but very well behaved.

We look forward to a great year in 2015, when these musicians will join our Senior and performing bands.

Teeball and Softball Success

Congratulations to both the Girls' Junior Teeball and Senior Softball teams, on their amazing effort throughout the PSSA season. Both teams ended up being named 2014 Premiers, joining the Boy's Teeball and Softball teams, to make it a clean Connells Point sweep for the year.

The Teeball team beat Mortdale and Oatley to win their competition, while the seniors beat Oatley West and Oatley to claim their title. The Senior Softballers are to be congratulated on not losing a game the entire season.

Many thanks must go to the players, who have been a pleasure to train and take to PSSA games. They always display our schools values and encourage the other team when they are not on the field. I must also thank the parents for their support, by both attending games and ensuring their children make it to training on time.

We look forward to another successful season in 2015.

Our Performing Arts Showcase will be held on Tuesday 2^ndDecember at 7PM. For parents who are new to having their child participate in our Showcase extravaganza, this is a major event within our school calendar which involves all K-2 students and our senior performance groups.

All children from Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have been busily learning the dances which are performed on stage at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre. Also on the entertainment bill are our School Band, Junior and Senior Choirs, Junior Girls', Senior Girls' and Boys' Dance Group, Drama Group and, our newest group, Splash.

This year all Performing Arts Showcase tickets will be sold online. These will be available for purchase from 9am on November 1^st, 2014. You will be able to select your own seats, so we would advise that you book in early! Tickets are $14 each (with a 30c processing surcharge)

Mathematics Forum

Mandarin language classes available in Term 4

PSSA Finals Cancelled

Unfortunately, the school has received notice that the PSSA finals have been cancelled. The email from the President of the Georges River PSSA is below. Congratulations to all of the Connells Point teams who made the finals day and competed to the best of their ability throughout the season.

I have received advice this morning that all Hurstville Council parks will remain closed tomorrow, Friday 22 August.

Therefore, unfortunately, all PSSA Sport is cancelled for tomorrow. There is no provision for rescheduling finals and therefore no Premiers or Runners Up awarded for Season 2, 2014

The CPPS P&C is delighted to be organising the 2014 Spring Fete to celebrate the school's 80th anniversary from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 30 August.

Entry is free and there is plenty of children's entertainment on offer: a giant slide, Jurassic Park jumping castle, rock'n'roll round-up, trampoline bungee, 8 metre climbing rockwall, hands-on craft stalls, giveaways, showbags, a petting zoo, pony rides and free activities.

There is fabulous live entertainment including the Rockdale Musical Society doing a special showcase of their forthcoming 'High School Musical' performances.

There is an exciting array of market stalls including fashion, accessories, children's European shoes, jewellery, plants, second-hand books and DVDs, award winning coffee, homemade delights including cakes, slices, cupcakes, fudge and fine chocolates, lollies and delicious food stalls.

The auction presented by Raine & Horne will commence at 1pm on the stage and offer a wide range of items including:

A framed Wallabies jersey signed by Nathan Sharpe and John Eales (donated by Purnell Motors).
A signed 2014 Cronulla Sharks jersey (donated by Raine & Horne).
A framed and signed Michael Hussey photograph (donated by Commonwealth Bank South Hurstville).

A Winning Pair!

Congratulations to both the boys' teeball and softball teams, as they completed their seasons without losing a game! The teams played very well, displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout every game.

In the finals, the juniors won against Peakhurst West, ten runs to one. The seniors beat Lugarno, fifteen runs to three, to finish off their season. There were some excellent individual performances on the day and each student received a premiership ribbon.

Thanks to all the parents for their support throughout the season, and congratulations to the students who were selected in these teams. We look forward to defending our title in 2015.

Work of the Week - WOW Award!

Each week, one student from Stage 1 and one from Stages 2 and 3 will be presented with the WOW Award in recognition of excellence in work and presentation. Winners will receive a certificate while nominees will be given a commendation award.

The winning work will be published in the school's newsletter and featured on the school's website.

Premier's Spelling Bee

Connells Point Public School has enrolled in the Premier's Spelling Bee for 2013. This is a valuable opportunity for students to challenge their spelling prowess individually, within grade groups and then at the higher stage level.

In order to ensure that all children have a fair and equitable chance to perform in the lead up to the selection process, we encourage all children to take part in the grade selection.

In the first instance, each grade will conduct a mini spelling bee in order to select the best 15 spellers from the grade.
These 15 finalists will then compete at a stage level - Junior (years 3 & 4) and Senior (Years 5 & 6)
Two winners will then be selected from the Junior and Senior divisions, to represent the school at a regional level.

The grade competitions will take place in week 5 of Term 3, with the Stage Final taking place in Week 6. All of the words are now available from the Arts Unit website. We will publish the password to access the lists in this week's newsletter. Please note that the junior words begin at Level 1 and go to Level 5 and the senior words begin at Level 2 and go to Level 7.

Gold, Gold, Gold for CPPS!

Congratulations to the band members who recently received gold medals at the annual Bandfest. The Performing, Senior and Junior Bands all received the highest possible level of achievement, after performing at the St George Bank Auditorium in Kogarah.

I hope that you enjoy watching the videos below, which demonstrate the extraordinary talent that we have at our school. We would also like to express our thanks to our dedicated band master, Mr Kevin Skues. Without his leadership none of this would be possible.

Smash the Trash!

The SRC is currently trying to lower the amount of rubbish found on the playground as well as raise awareness about the amount of non-biodegradable rubbish we produce. The photos here tell a sorry tale about the amount of rubbish left in the playground! As a result, we are running a Smash the Trash Day on Monday 17 June. Students are asked to bring all their food and drinks for the day in re-useable containers only. Class SRC representatives will award a sticker to each student who has a "rubbish free" lunch box and a class tally of how many students are rubbish-free will be taken.

Multicultural Public Speaking 2013

Multicultural Public Speaking

The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition heightens students' awareness of multicultural issues while developing their interest in public speaking and improving their confidence and speech-writing skills. The competition is open to years 3-6, with a junior and senior category.

For the competition, students present both a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. For their prepared speech, students must choose a topic from the list below. The impromptu speech will be chosen by the adjudicator on the day and will be on a general (not multicultural) theme. Contestants will have 5 minutes to write their impromptu speeches.

Greek Celebrations!

Two students from Connells Point Public School met and walked with Prime Minister Julia Gillard at the Greek Independence Day celebrations, which were held in the Domain.

Samuel and Anna-Marie were both very excited and nervous; however, did a great job. Samuel had a great afternoon and said that it was the best day of his life, while Anna-Maria said that she was so nervous that her hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Greek Independence Day commemoratesthe 1828 exit of Greece from the Ottoman Empire.Thousands of Greek Australians came together in Sydney to hear the Prime Minister speak. Samuel said that Julia Gillard was "very nice".

Sydney Youth Writing Competition 2012

Each year, Sydney holds a "Youth Writing Competition" where students between the ages of 7 and 12 from around the world can submit any number of entries of writing in a variety of differing categories. A selection of entries is then chosen to be published for the current year. This year, that publication is called ‘Key. Face. Cloud.'

Awards are given for First, Second and Third Prizes, Highly Commended, Commended and Encouragement in each category.

We congratulate all those students of our school who entered the competition.

Season Three Sport Success

Congratulations to all of the teams that participated in the finals for Season 3 PSSA sport. Our school was represented in all of the sports that we entered; Cricket, Softball, Teeball, Oz-Tag and Newcombe Ball.

Both the Boys Junior Cricket Team and Senior Girls Softball team won their competitions, without being defeated in a single match all season. The Girls Teeball Team and Senior Newcombe Ball Team placed as runners up.

Thanks to the teachers who trained the teams this season and the students who represented our school with great vigour and sportsmanship.

Showcase 2012

Our sixth annual Performing Arts Showcase went off without a hitch. It was wonderful to have our students perform to a full house at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre and to hear the buzz of excitement and positive comments at the end of the evening.

I am immensely proud of, and grateful for, the dedication of our teachers in producing such a high quality event. The pursuit of excellence and personal best; the values of commitment and team work; and the joy of learning and performing were all clearly on display. That our students have these opportunities is a credit to our staff and to the support and encouragement provided by parents and families.

My thanks go to all the teachers and tutors who were responsible for the various items. Their names were listed in our program. I would also like to thank the supervising teachers - including casual teachers who came on the night to support the school - who looked after the children while they were not on stage. This is often a thankless and wearing task, but essential for the success of the evening. These events often call on extended family members to lend an extra hand - the contributions of our teachers' daughters, sons, partners and parents are greatly appreciated.

Special thanks go to the Showcase Organising Committee. Mr Cohen, Mrs Woodhams, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Dickson, Mrs Stevenson, Ms Challenor, Mrs Doulos, Mrs Green, Ms McCain and Mrs Szalay undertook all of the planning and management that goes into making such a big event run smoothly. They were ably supported by our office staff.

I'm sure you all loved the CPPS Video (and have been humming the tune ever since!) made by Mr Cohen and starring our students. It was a great way to start and finish the night.

Premier's Spelling Bee Final

Congratulations Anthony!

On Wednesday, 7 November 2012, Anthony represented Connells Point Public School in the state finals of the Premier's Spelling Bee, held at the ABC Centre in Sydney. Many hours of practice were needed to achieve this level of success.

The final group of seven children were very hard to separate. Anthony had to spell facetious, loquacious, erroneous, obsequious and psoriasis during the rounds. Many adults would surrender if asked to spell these words!

Finally, after many gruelling hours, Anthony finished third, succumbing to the word ‘opprobrium'.

What a fantastic result! Congratulations, Anthony; you did yourself, and our school, proud!

Congratulations to all of the students who took part in this year's Premier's Spelling Bee. As always the standard was very high and it took many rounds of words to single out the two representatives from each Stage.

Royal National Park

Our Excursion to The Royal National Park

On Monday, 21st May, Year 4 went on an excursion to the Royal National Park at Wattamolla. We travelled in a bus for approximately an hour.

When we arrived, we met three of the rangers at the National Park. The rangers introduced themselves and taught us about some of the animals that lived in the Royal National Park. The rangers let us pat some of the stuffed animals. Then we had morning tea.

The three different classes all started with different activities with different rangers. Our class did whale watching on a cliff, using binoculars. Unfortunately, we didn't see any whales. Sitting on the cliff gave us wonderful views of the coastline.

The next activity we experienced was Aboriginal culture. The ranger showed us how to make ropes with long reeds, make soap with leaves and water, and lots of other interesting activities. We then had lunch.

Our final activity was fishing for bugs in the Coot River. Only a few people caught bugs. We had a really fun day.

The classes gathered back together and we had to leave. We all had a wonderful time.

An Excursion to Wattamolla

Year 4 went on an excursion to Wattamolla Royal National Park. We arrived there at 10:00am; it was a fun ride!

When we got off the bus, the three rangers, Sue, David and Kerry, talked about the different animals. They were the Sugar Glider, Wallaby, Tawny Frog Mouth, Snake, Fox and Possum that lived in the National Park. After that, we were allowed to take photos of the animals and touched them. We then had recess.

Sue took our class on a coast walk. It was very rocky, but we finally got up to the top of the cliff and used binoculars to whale watch. Some people saw some squirts from the blow hole of whales; then we went down the rocky hill to where we started.

We then had lunch and Ranger David gave us a green berry to eat. It was yummy. He showed us how to make soap. It actually worked!

Then Kerry took us to Coot River to fish for bugs. I caught a little Water Boatman and my friend caught two bugs.

Finally we went back to school. The excursion was awesome!!!

On Tuesday 11^thSeptember, Stage 2 and 3 students took part in the school public speaking finals. The students delivered wonderful prepared speeches and then had to deliver an impromptu speech. The impromptu topic for Stage 3 was ‘Running Away‘ and the topic for Stage 2 students was ‘The Future'.

One student from each stage was selected to represent CPPS at the Georges River Zone Final on Wednesday 24 October.

Sydney Region Public Speaking Finals

We were very proud to have two students from Connells Point Public School represent our Georges River Network (comprised of 19 primary schools) in the Finals of the 2012 Sydney Region Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition.

On Tuesday 6 November, George and Dayna competed against the representatives of seven other Networks from Sydney Region. In all, there are 154 primary schools in Sydney Region, so George and Dayna were competing at a very high level against "the best of the best" in our region.

George competed in the Stage 2 competition. His prepared speech was "Why We Should Not Shop at Woolworths or Coles". The impromptu topic was "The Best Things in Life are Free". George enjoyed competing at this elite level and is to be congratulated on representing our Network, and our school, so well. Thank you, George, and very well done!

Dayna competed in the Stage 3 competition. Her prepared speech was "You Tube Censorship" and the impromptu topic was "Facing Responsibilities". Dayna is a highly experienced and accomplished public speaker and has represented our school, network and region with great success over a number of years. On this occasion, Dayna was again successful, and was selected as the Stage 3 Winner in this competition. Congratulations, Dayna!

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the Georges River Public Speaking (and Network 8) Finals, that were held at Connells Point Public School. The standard was extremely high and all of the students involved represented their schools wonderfully.

Debating Quarter Finals

Congratulations to the very talented debaters in the Premier's Debating Challenge. Our school progressed to the quarter final, after winner the zone rounds of our competition. It is the first year that our school has entered the competition and we unfortunately lost in the quarter final to McCallums Hill Public School. The debate was very close and students were asked to argue 'That money makes the world go round'. We were assigned the negative which really put some pressure on our speakers. Our team is to be congratulated on their sportsmanship, composure and dedication to learning new things. We look forward to a successful debating season next year.

In our fourth debating round, the students were asked to argue ‘That canteens should be allowed to sell junk food". Connells Point PS was the affirmative team and just edged out Sutherland PS (which was also undefeated in the competition).

Also, congratulations to our Sydney Region debaters who have been making great progress in their competition. Both Connells Point PS Teams (A and B), were asked to debate "That Australia should have a three day weekend". Team B was victorious and will now debate against Carlton Public School in a tie break, to see who progresses to the next round.

We congratulate all of these students on learning a new and valuable skill. These students have given up their free time, to make the most of the extra curricular activities offered at Connells Point PS. We wish them well in upcoming debates.

Congratulations to Scott in Year 5, who recently competed in the National School Swimming Championships. Scott achieved amazing results including:

a bronze medal in the 200m Medley Relay
8th in Australian 50m Freestyle Final
Gold in the 4x50m Freestyle Relay!

Multicultural Public Speaking

Congratulations to George, Yianni, Dayna and Anastasia, who represented Connells Point PS in the 2012 Multicultural Public Speaking competition. Students were asked to prepare a multicultural speech and complete an impromptu. The junior students were given the impromptu topic ‘My Favourite Things', while the seniors were asked to speak about ‘The Cost of Winning'.

All of the speakers did exceptionally well, especially Anastasia, who was judged best in the senior division. Anastasia will now go on to represent our region at the next level of the competition. We wish her the best of luck!

Congratulations to the students who participated in the Georges River District Cross Country on Thursday 24 May at Gannons Park. Our school team ran very well overall and placed 2nd out of the 16 school represented at the carnival. Both the 8/9 year old girl and 11 year old girl teams won their age groups. Three of our students will progress to the Sydney East Carnival after placing in the top six of their age group (with 64 competitors in each race). Well done to Scott, Nivage, and Yianni for racing so well and we wish them the best of luck for their next competition.

Season One Success

Congratulations to all of the Connells Point Public School students who represented our school in PSSA sport this season. We were lucky enough to experience great success, with all of our sports being represented in the finals that took place on 11^thMay.

A BIG congratulations to the Junior Boys Teeball and Junior Girls Cricket who were awarded the titles of ‘Premiers' this season. Also, well done to both Senior and Junior Newcombeball and Senior Boys softball who were awarded ‘Runners Up' titles.

Well done to the Senior Boys Oz Tag and Senior Girls Cricket teams, for performing well in the finals and demonstrating positive sportsmanship.

All students had a great time at the finals and are looking forward to Season 2, which begins in two weeks' time!

Farewell Mr Shirley

Mr Shirley has been a teacher for close to 35 years, and has been a member of the Connells Point Public School staff for 19 years. In that time, Mr Shirley has contributed to the life of the school in many ways, including as a PSSA coach and as coordinator of the annual ICAS (UNSW) Competitions.

Mr Shirley has served the Department of Education and Communities, and Connells Point Public School, with loyalty, integrity and personal commitment to the values of public education. He has shared his deep and wide ranging knowledge with students and colleagues alike. He has always demonstrated great respect for his workmates, and his manners are a link to a gentler, nicer time when courtesy was the norm, not the exception.

Mr Shirley has always set high standards for his students and, over the years, parents have expressed appreciation for the solid grounding and training their children have received when in his class. He has made a difference to many lives. Here is an extract from just one of the letters I have received:

"From Day 1, (my daughter) respected Mr Shirley. Mr Shirley provided the children with structure and discipline—they always knew where they stood and what was expected. A set amount of work had to be achieved each day and he always acknowledged "excellent effort". Mr Shirley was very firm but very fair. (My daughter) had a wonderful year in his class. She learnt so much but most importantly, she was always happy. I have had a long association with CPPS and most years have been happy years with both my girls. However, I feel Mr Shirley needs a special mention. It is apparent that he is an extremely dedicated teacher and I am so grateful that (my daughter) was in Mr Shirley's class."

I am sure I speak for the entire school community, both past and present, in wishing Mr Shirley a wonderful retirement, with the freedom to pursue his interests and hobbies away from the stresses and demands of the workplace. Thank you, Graeme, for your service to Connells Point Public School and to the thousands of children you have taught over the years. Our best wishes go with you always.

A BIG thanks to Panasonic for sponsoring the Kids Witness News (KWN) short film competition in 2011. Connells Point Public School recently received our prize of $2000 worth of brand new state of the art equipment. The school now has 13 new digital cameras, some of which record HD video and are waterproof. We also received a new digital video camera and a 32 inch LCD screen from Panasonic last year!

This equipment will be of great benefit to the students of Connells Point for many years to come.

We would like to thank Panasonic and all of the people who made KWN possible. It was a great opportunity and we appreciate your support.

David in Year 6, is currently appearing in the Belvoir production of the play, "Babyteeth". Combining his many performing arts talents and especially his outstanding performance in violin, David is appearing in the current run of this professional and well-regarded theatre company. David has also been selected (again) as member of the Sydney Youth Orchestras (Peter Seymour Orchestra 2012 and TangoOZ 2012).

World Football Academy

Congratulations to Yianni in Year 4 who has been selected by the World Football Group Academy to play soccer against some very big English Premier League and Championship League 1 clubs in the UK. He will be playing teams including: Everton, Manchester City, Manchester United, Preston North End, Bolton, Leeds and Blackburn Rovers. Yianni will also have the opportunity to attend some English Premier League Games and tour some of the stadiums.

Farewell, Ms Scally!

As the end of term approaches, it draws to a close the long and successful career for our Assistant Principal, Ms Jenny Scally. After more than 40 years of teaching and caring for thousands of students in NSW public schools, Ms Scally is retiring.

Ms Scally joined our executive team six years ago. However, this was not her first venture into Connells Point Public School, having been a student here from 1955 to 1962! As she recollected at the time of our 75th Anniversary:

" The buildings we were in then were weatherboard, very similar to the blue ones still existing. They have been replaced with brick buildings now, and when I first came to Connells Point as a teacher, it was quite an odd feeling to see how much change had occurred. Another strange feeling was that the big double storey building was so much smaller than I remembered....When, after a parent fundraising project lasting many years, the new assembly hall was opened, I remember being part of the choir that sang "Bless this House" at the opening. It was a great thrill. Seeing how well utilised it is now, I'm sure those parents would be well pleased with the results."

Ms Scally's father, brother and two sisters were also pupils of our school, so you can see that the connection she has had with Connells Point Public School has been long and enduring.

Ms Scally has been a wonderful Assistant Principal and class teacher, bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to build the strength and skills of our K-2 teachers, and contributing so much to the organisation and management of the school. She has remained enthusiastic and committed to achieving the very best outcomes for students, and to supporting teachers and parents as they work together in the interests of our children.

Through all the changes to schools, curriculum, methods, resources and community expectations, Ms Scally has moved with the times, embracing the best of the new and retaining the best of the tried and true.

As she moves into a time of her life less governed by bells, programs, meetings and sheer hard work, we thank her for everything she has done for the children, staff and parents of Connells Point Public School. We wish her a peaceful and long retirement, spent doing only the things that bring her joy.

Kitchen Whiz – Lights, Camera, Action!

Congratulations to the 24 students from Connells Point Public School who participated in the 4^th series of the television show ‘Kitchen Whiz' last week. The students were great ambassadors for our school, participating in the messy activities and fun challenges, while picking up some great prizes along the way!

‘Kitchen Whiz' is an exciting half hour game show on Chanel 9, which is a frenzy of food and fun! The host Beau Walker (Nitro from The Shak) guided the two competing teams through both questions and exciting activities. To assist the contestants in the kitchen with chopping and cooking was the Kitchen Ninja, a master in Kitchen Martial Arts….if you don't believe us, just watch the shows which will go to air late in 2012…

2011 Showcase - "The Best Ever!"

This year's Performing Arts Showcase was widely regarded as our best ever! The quality, variety and number of performances were exceptional, and a huge credit to our talented and dedicated teachers and students.

So many people deserve to be acknowledged and thanked for their efforts. First in line is the Showcase Organising Committee, comprised of Paul Cohen, Gillian Anderson, Carol Woodhams, Kathy Stevenson, Narelle McCain, Rhonda Law, Julie Challenor and Fiona Dickson. The logistics of such an event, involving so many students, require superb team work and planning skills. Their vision of ways to build and improve on each year‘s Showcase has lifted the bar, yet again. As well as the overall management and coordination, each of the committee members also prepared and worked with groups on items for the show. Their commitment and professionalism are superb.

The children were a joy to behold – such energy and enthusiasm, and obvious enjoyment in performing. Thank you to parents for supporting their participation, and for providing their costumes for the different items. I‘m sure you were as proud as we were!

A BIG congratulations to Evan in 6C who placed 3^rd in the 2011 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee. This phenomenal effort is the result of years of dedication and study. Evan who is the school Vice Captain, beat over 110 000 NSW students to progress to the finals that were held at the ABC studios and broadcast live on ABC radio. Evan would like to thank everyone who supported him in achieving his goal (especially his parents).

Congratulations to Lara in Year 4, who won the Stage 2 Public Speaking final for Sydney Region Primary Schools. Lara worked very hard to achieve this result, with the adjudicator saying that she had beautiful diction and a natural consistent flow.

Congratulations to all of our students who competed in the Public Speaking Competition held at Hurstville South Public School. We were represented by Dayna (Stage 3), Lara (Stage 2) and Erin (Early Stage 1). Unfortunately, Noah in Stage 1 was ill and unable to attend.

Lara in Year 4 won the Stage 2 competition and went on to represent our School Network in the Sydney Region competition held on Tuesday 15th November at Engadine West Public School (see result above). Dayna received a Highly Commended award and all of the speakers were fabulous ambassadors for Connells Point PS.

Below is a recount from Lara in Year 4.

On 26^th October, I went to the District Public Speaking Competition, held at Hurstville South Public School. When I arrived, we went to their old hall. As soon as I found out I was up against 18 other schools, I was extremely nervous.

We started with our prepared speeches and I was 6^th with "Manners are Important". When I was done, I went back to my seat and listened to another 13 speeches with topics ranging from Chocolate to Volcanoes.

We then had a five minute break, where parents could get tea, coffee and cakes. The speakers also got a bag containing a packet of chips and a bottle of juice.

After that, we were taken into a room where we were given our impromptu topic of "Technology". We were asked to prepare a speech in five minutes which needed to last a maximum of one minute. Once again, I went 6^th and then sat back into my seat.

The adjudicator talked about what he looked for in speeches; which were manner, matter and method. After this was done, the awards were given. Every competitor got a participation certificate saying their name and school. Then the two highly commended trophies were given out. Finally the winner was announced and I was astonished to hear my name called out!

After a wonderful day, I went back to my class where everyone congratulated me! I was really happy with how I went and so was my family. Although I did feel really nervous before my speech, at the end of the day, I felt the complete opposite!!!

St George Soccer Success

Congratultaions to Kieren and Nathan H in Year 6 for being accepted in the Division 1 Youth League squad for the St George Region. Also, well done to Timothy and Kyle in year 5 for qualifying for the St George Metropolitan Squad. All of these students demonstrate a passion and talent for soccer and have been instrumental in our school's PSSA success for many years.

We wish them every sporting success in the not so distant future!

Congratulations to the students involved in Kids Witness News, which is a short film competition run by Panasonic. Our school's entry, entitled ‘21^st Century Communication', won the 2011 KWN New Vision Award for Primary Schools in NSW and the ACT. The award was announced at a national ceremony held at the Dendy Opera Quays, which involved finalists from every state in Australia.

Connells Point Public School was presented with a trophy which adorns the newly renovated foyer and $2000 worth of Panasonic equipment (in addition to the video camera, equipment and LCD screen that was donated to the school).

The core team of 13 students that worked with Mr Cohen included;

The competition has allowed the students to develop camaraderie with their peers and children from other years. It has established a common goal, allowing the students to compete in a team event, which is often reserved for those who are good at sport (and not necessarily creative).

Below are some comments from the KWN team;

· "I particularly enjoyed the car scene because we got to wear cool costumes and use a green screen. I also made lots of friends, but didn't expect to do so much hard work! It was really fun!" Georgia

· "I really liked how everyone shared and cooperated together to complete a fabulous short film. I didn't expect the movie to come out looking so professional. I really like our short film." Dayna

· "Editing was heaps of fun; I really enjoyed watching my friends on camera, especially when they looked weird!" Brooke

· "I learnt that a lot of hard work goes into making a video. It takes a long time to take one shot and you have to be very organised. I now understand why it takes months to make a movie that lasts for an hour and a half." Clover

· "I liked being able to use new ideas in drama and see what other people came up with. I also really liked using the new technology and figuring out how to use it." Baillie

· "I learnt how to use a Panasonic camcorder and also a smoke machine. The KWN program was a great way to learn how to edit a video, write a script and use different cameras." Anthony

· "The most fun part was video editing, because I didn't have to act! I learnt all about the functions of Pinnacle Studio, but did not expect it to be so time consuming." James

· "I enjoyed meeting with friends, cooperating and experiencing new things. " Brendan

· "I really didn't expect some people to have such a creative mind." Brooke

· "I enjoyed acting and watching our final product. I didn't expect how good it would turn out!" Dean

BER Opening at CPPS

On 1st September 2011 the new facilities built under the Building Education Revolution (BER) were officially opened. Our school was lucky enough to receive a new library, three classrooms, two refurbished classrooms and an updated computer lab. The federal member for Banks, Mr Daryl Melham MP unveiled the plaque, before being taken on a school tour by our school captains, school executive, P&C and School Council representatives. These state of the art facilities will assist in delivering quality education, for many years to come.

Communication!

COMMUNICATING IN THE 21st CENTURY

Numerous technological advancements in the last few decades have had a significant impact upon the way in which people communicate. Emails have become a prominent means of communication.

The students in 3D have come to recognise the importance of being able to converse with one another via email. 3D students have developed their ability to share their thoughts, opinions and comments with each other and the wider public, whilst abiding by the etiquette required when emailing.

‘Countdown' is a school magazine, read by the students in Year 3 and it corresponds with the Early Stage 2, NSW K–6 curriculum.

The mascots of the magazine, Yakka and Yip guide newly independent readers through a wealth of stories, poems, plays and articles, whilst encouraging the readers to contact them via email.

The most recent edition of the ‘Countdown' magazine, not only mentions the emails Yip and Yakka have received from the students at Connells Point Public School, but has included an email sent to them by one of our students.

Public Speaking 2011

As a key part of our Talking and Listening program, all Connells Point Public School students take part in our school-wide public speaking competition.

Each student in the school presents a prepared speech to his or her class. From these presentations, representatives are chosen to progress to our school stage semi-final competitions. Finalists are then selected to represent stages which compete in the school-wide competition. To assist in the differentiation of student performances, finalists will be required to present an impromptu speech on a topic provided at the final.

Stage winners of finals will proceed to represent the school at the Georges River Network Public Speaking Competition and, should success be achieved at that level, progress to represent at the next level.

We look forward to all students taking this opportunity to further develop their confidence in speaking before an audience.

Farewell, Mrs Siddons!

This week marks the official end of the career of one of our most special and longest serving office staff, Mrs Diane Siddons. For more than 20 years, Mrs Siddons has been an integral part of the life of Connells Point Public School. She has served in the front office, preparing the Newsletter, attending to Reception and assisting staff, parents and students.

Of particular importance has been her role as Library Assistant, where she has worked alongside teacher/librarians in the operation of the library. Mrs Siddons has ordered, accessioned, repaired and maintained our library resources, for students and teachers, and ensured that the library is well organised and inviting. She has worked tirelessly to make sure that the move to our beautiful new library was as smooth as possible. We are delighted that she was here to enjoy our wonderful new facilities!

However, it is much more than her skills and professionalism that have enhanced our school. Through her dedication, commitment, gentleness, encouragement, discretion, patience and care, she has built positive and lasting relationships with hundreds of children and their parents and teachers. Nothing is ever too much trouble; she always has a smile; and her calm and reassuring manner has made students feel safe and secure in her care.

Hopefully, we will be able to have Mrs Siddons return for casual work while her vacancy is being permanently filled, and beyond that, if she can fit us in between her busy volunteer work and caring for her many grandchildren!

On behalf of our extended school community, I thank Mrs Siddons for all that she has done for Connells Point Public School during her many years of service to our school. We wish her a happy and satisfying retirement, and look forward to having her return to us as the opportunities arise.

Create East “The Button" 2011

Not so long ago, I was really lucky to have had the opportunity to audition and perform as part of the drama group for Create East's 2011 production, "THE BUTTON".

In just three days, 200 primary students talented in band, choir, dance, drama and visual arts came together and brought to life "THE BUTTON". "THE BUTTON" is a story about a girl who finds a mysterious button which teleports her to the future. Her initial excitement upon arrival changes when she digs below the surface of the complex possible future. She befriends a lovestruck boy who ends up working beside her in an attempt to be free.

Twenty Sydney Region Public Schools were involved and I was the only student from Connells Point Public School which was a little awkward at first but it didn't take me very long before I met some really nice people who I still keep in touch with now.

The three-day workshop was hard work as we had to be at the theatre early in the morning till late in the afternoon. On the day of the performance we practiced, rehearsed and worked a whole 12 hours. It was exhausting but I had so much fun. I had three roles in the production. I was a high school teacher, a police officer and lastly, I was student at the school disco. We performed 2 shows on the evening of the performance and the theatre was full house for both performances. The cheers and applause we got from our audiences was fantastic.

I came back from that experience with new friends, new skills, and a whole lot more confidence in me. Create East was brilliant.

Lewis Parter performed at Connells Point Public School on Tuesday 21^st June, 2011. He was born in Bowen, North Queensland. His language was that of the Birri Gubba and his heritage is of the central Queensland Daranbal people. Mr Parter states "My heart is for my people and a better understanding of my people. I believe my presentation allows for what I call a "soft" approach to Reconciliation."

Below are some comments from our Kindergarten students.

Today we saw the NAIDOC man and he played the piano. Some people came up to hold the flags. He played the didgeridoo and the guitar. Erin

Season 1 PSSA Success

Congratulations to Connells Point's PSSA teams who ALL qualified for the Season 1 Finals. These sports included junior and senior teams in newcombeball, boys oz tag, girls cricket, teeball and softball.

We are happy to announce that both the senior cricket and junior teeball teams won their competitions, proudly accepting the title of Georges River PSSA Premiers for 2011.

In very close matches, both senior and junior newcombeball, junior cricket and junior oz tag teams received runners up ribbons. An amazing result when six out of eight teams finish in the top two positions!

Congratulations to all the students who took part, for your energy, hard work and great sportsmanship. A big thank you also to the coaches, who have done a fabulous job to achieve such outstanding results.

Zulu Song & Dance

ZULU PERFORMANCE

On Thursday 17^th March, a Zulu Performer visited our school. Lucky Phewa was born in Durban, South Africa. He is an

outstanding musician and performer and has learned the traditional dances of the Zulu people from an early age. He came to Connells Point Public School to show us some of his amazing cultural dances.

Upon his entrance, he started singing a traditional Zulu song and then he surprised us all, with a magnificently loud drum roll that scared some of us out of our skins! Then he showed us the different types of drums.

He asked if any boys wanted to play the drums. Lefteri (5/6G) was invited to join Lucky on stage and play a drum. Mr Cohen, Mrs Law, Mrs Rehayem, Mrs Woodhams and Mrs Pavlakis were also lucky enough to be invited up onto the stage steps to play the drums.

Lucky also invited some boys and girls to do a traditional dance that only males and females can do. It was very entertaining!

I hope the teachers had fun seeing us roll around on floor, nearly splitting our sides with laughter, when they danced. They were asked to do a traditional dance on their own and Mr Cohen did the men's dance with Lefteri playing the drums.... very amusing!

It was definitely a worthwhile experience!

Farewell Mrs Whale

Friday 4^th March marked the end of an era for Connells Point Public School, with the retirement of our long-serving Assistant Principal, and often Relieving Principal, Mrs Anne Whale.

Mrs Whale has been a member of this staff since 1987, and a teacher with the Department of Education and Training for 33 years. In that time, she has worked closely with thousands of children and their families, and with hundreds of colleagues.

To each of these relationships she has brought enthusiasm, care, expertise, understanding, good humour, wisdom, support and guidance. Mrs Whale has been endlessly positive and built wonderful relationships with students, parents and staff alike.

Mrs Whale has been instrumental in many key programs over the years. Most recently, she has supported and promoted public speaking and writing across the school, increasing participation and raising standards and resulting in outstanding student achievement. These are just two examples, of many, where her influence and talent has lifted student performance.

Mrs Whale has been a great leader of teams, bringing out the best in her colleagues and maintaining their focus on quality curriculum and improved learning outcomes. Her enthusiasm has encouraged others to try new things and take on new responsibilities, so that students would have more opportunities.

On behalf of our whole school community, I thank Mrs Whale for all that she has done for our school and its students over the last 23 years. We wish her a most enjoyable and well-earned retirement and look forward to welcoming her back when she is ready to join our team of casual and temporary teaching staff!

2011 Swimming Carnival

It was a cold start to the morning and I wasn't looking forward to jumping into the cold 50m pool. It was not long before we were all swimming in the pool and it turned out to be a warm day. Almost everybody did freestyle in the races but not many did butterfly.

There was some great cheering going on in the crowd and Dr McKirdy gave out 1,000 house points to the loudest house cheers. It was great to see lots of parents at the carnival cheering for their children.

I always looking forward to our swimming carnivals because not only do we get to swim in the pool but we also get to sit with our friends and eat ice blocks together. Everybody should give a big clap for Miss Benson for organising our carnival.

On Tuesday this week we had our swimming carnival. We caught the bus from school to the pool. On arrival at the pool there was a light shower of rain. Everyone was settled into the stands in houses and the cheering started. Before starting the races, we had to sing Happy Birthday to Mrs McCain.

The carnival started with the 100m freestyle and the age races for freestyle, breastroke, backstroke, backstroke and butterfly. While the kids were swimming there was lots of cheering going on.

We had a break for lunch before the finals and relay races were swum. Dr McKirdy got each house to sing their chant and they were sung with lots of enthusiasm.

Throughout the day we were allowed to go to the canteen. Our water safety teacher Mr Parson went to the rescue of a student that he thought needed help.

Clean up was done and we were on our way back to school. The rain stayed away.

We need to wait to see which house won. A good day was had by all involved.

Performing Arts Showcase

What a delight it was to watch our children on stage at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre! So many beaming faces, proudly showing their families their skills and talents in a huge range of performing arts: dance, singing, public speaking, drama, musicianship and skipping. The confidence of the performers was amazing—nobody was overwhelmed by the bright lights or large audience!

I never take evenings like our Showcase for granted. They only happen because of the commitment and good will of teachers who are prepared to give their time to create quality performances. If teachers don't put up their hands for this extra workload, they just don't happen. So my sincere thanks to each and every staff member who lends their support to making our Performing Arts Showcase an annual highlight.

Every child who gave of their best deserves to feel the glow of achievement, none more so that those who performed an individual item. That's a pretty big stage when you're the only person on it! So well done to Charlie, George, Lara, Dayna and Fiona, who delivered their winning public speaking speeches, and to David, for his truly amazing violin solo. I can't imagine where their skills and talents will take them in the next 10 years!

Connells Point Public School values participation, commitment and striving for excellence. We encourage all students to have a go, find a talent and then work at developing it. The results for those who take the opportunities, and stay the course, were evident last night. As in life, you get back what you put in. Those who excel, whether in the performing or creative arts, academically or in sport, do so because they put in the hours of practice that are essential for excellence. There is a theory that says 10,000 hours of concentrated and reflective practice is required to achieve mastery of anything — this amounts to about 10 years. Talent is not enough on its own, without dedication and commitment.

At the Showcase this year, we saw many children who are well on the way to becoming masters of their talents.

Japanese Language and Culture

In 2010, Connells Point Public School was part of a federally funded program to promote the teaching of Asian languages in schools. As the result of a grant applied for by our local high school, Blakehurst HS, three local primary schools - Connells Point, Carlton South and Blakehurst - were able to offer either Japanese or Chinese language and culture lessons to their students.

We opted to provide two Year 4 classes with weekly Japanese lessons, taught by Miss Kylie Ha, from Blakehurst High School.

This has been a most successful program, and has provided the participating students with a wonderful exposure to an Asian language. It is hoped that students will go on to further study of Asian languages in high school.

Year 6 Camp - Myuna Bay

Year 6 camp was a tremendous adventure to experience. Everyone had an awesome time and we all had lots of laughs. It was a big eye opener to how lucky we are here at Connells Point Public School. We are one of the many schools to have this amazing privilege.

When we got to Myuna Bay we were all very excited to see our cabins. There were multiple lodges at camp. Our first meal when we arrived was sandwiches. Luckily, it wasn't that bad. Before camp, we were divided into three groups called The Pelicans (Miss Benson's group), The Wobbegongs (Mr Parsons' group) and The Green Turtles (Mr Cohen's group). There were two other schools there from Newcastle and St Andrews.

We were fortunate enough to do some exciting activities while we were at the camp. The activities included Kayaking, Flying Fox, Giant Swing, Bushwalking, Swimming and Tennis. As you can read we had a lot to do at camp. At night time we did night activities which were basically just fun and interactive games.

Kayaking

Kayaking was a fun but tiring activity. We had a few problems with a couple of people capsizing but we quickly got used to the idea of stroking and twisting simultaneously. Some people didn't get used to the idea very quickly and just kept on kayaking around in circles.

Flying Fox

The Flying Fox was a fun and entertaining activity. It was an extraordinary adventure as we were strapped in our harnesses and flew down a 30 metre long wire. It was a shame that we only had time for one go each because it was so much fun that everyone would have liked to have many more turns.

Giant Swing

The Giant Swing was a nerve-racking activity as most of us were harnessed and pulled up the 18-metre swing. We then had to pull a purple string to release ourselves. We all didn't expect the first jolt but then it felt like we were flying. Some people (Daniel Wang, not singling out anyone) even did the flying chicken dance. It was a fun activity and most of us favoured it the most.

Camp out

The camp out was a very interesting and thrilling adventure, as all of us went on an exciting journey around the forest. We had a tiring walk, which took approximately 20 minutes, but we managed to find our way around. Everyone also got in groups and made a camp fire, (luckily none of us burned down the bush), and we cooked some delicious damper.

The Food

The food was alright, but not to everyone's liking! We had a room which was called the dining room, but it looked a lot like a cafeteria, where we would eat our meals with the other schools. Every group had either one breakfast, lunch or dinner duty.

On behalf of Year 6, we would like to thank the teachers - Ms Benson, Mr Parsons, Mrs Whale and Mr Cohen - for letting us have this awesome privilege. It was an amazing experience and we all had the time of our lives.

Our Record Breaking At

Connells Point Public School and The Weather Channel smashed the Guinness World Record for the world's largest interactive weather report as part of National Science Week.

To break the record, 502 schools measured the temperature in their playground at midday on August 18^th and submitted the readings to The Weather Channel, who broadcast the results as part of The Big Report and on Nickelodeon.

The Weather Channel trounced the previous record held by the BBC, in the UK, who had 261 schools submit the temperature.

Chris Sheedy, from Guinness World Records said, "I have seen hundreds of record being broken, but nothing thrills me more than one that involves thousands of children who not only experience the joy of taking part, but who also gain valuable knowledge along the way. The Weather Channel has done an incredible job in helping Australian kids smash the Poms out of the park."

Guarding against Cyberbullying

To keep our community well informed about cyberbullying, our P&C has arranged for the Youth Liaison Officer from Hurstville LAC Police, Constable Dawn Pointon, to speak to parents. Constable Pointon will be presenting an information session on 19 October in our Performing Arts Room. Parents and carers of students currently enrolled at Connells Point Public School are warmly invited to attend.

Understanding the issues around cyberbullying, and how it can involve your child, is fundamental to the safe and appropriate use of the internet, text messaging and social networking sites. Even if your child is not at this stage yet, it is critical that you set up guidelines and make decisions now, to help you in the future.

Please keep this date free in your diary, and make use of Constable Pointon's experience with this important issue.

Outstanding Musician

Connells Point Public School Year 4 student, David Carreon, is an outstanding musician whose talent has seen him selected to perform with the Sydney Region Choral Festival Symphony Orchestra. David has also been a member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra for the last four years. Given that he is now only 9 years old, this is a truly remarkable achievement!

David, who is, of course, a member of our school band, plays piano at 8th Grade level, and violin at 7th Grade level. In the Sydney Region Symphony Orchestra, of which he is the youngest member, David was selected to perform a solo piece on violin as part of the Choral Festival at the Sydney Opera House. David performed Vivaldi's Concerto in D Minor.

To be chosen for a solo performance at David's age is a wonderful achievement, and acknowledges David's exceptional talent. We are very proud of our young high achiever. Congratulations, David!

Public Speaking Success!

Congratulations to Fiona Pyliotis and Dayna Kostantakis who recently achieved outstanding success in public speaking.

Fiona, above left, represented Georges River Network in the finals of the Sydney Region Public Speaking Competition. Against highly talented speakers from schools in our region, she was the winner of the Stage 3 section. The adjudicators commented on the high quality of the competition.

Dayna, above right, represented Sydney Region in the State Finals of the Multicultural Public Speaking competition. Against the "best of the best" speakers from all over New South Wales, Dayna was a highly accomplished and confident speaker in an elite field. We are proud to have had two students in the last three years from Connells Point Public School reach the state finals of this prestigious competition.

Congratulations to Fiona and Dayna on their outstanding achievements, and we thank their teachers and families for the support and encouragement they provided.

Public Speaking Competition

As a key part of our Talking and Listening program, Connells Point Public School students recently participated in our school-wide public speaking competition.

Each student presented a prepared speech to his or her class. From this, representatives were chosen who progressed to our school final held on Tuesday 14 September, 2010. To help differentiate the performance of these high performing students, they were also required to present an impromptu speech on a given topic.

Results of the competiton are published in our Newsletter of Week 9 Term 3 2010. Stage winners now proceed to represent the school at the Georges River Network Public Speaking Competition.

Congratulations to all students who took part, and who further developed their confidence and skills in speaking to an audience.

Premier's Spelling Bee

The school's spelling bee was held on Wednesday, 25 Augustin the school hall. There was a great participation rate, with

many students eager to test their spelling skills. Winner of the junior section was Anthony of 2/3K, with the runner-up being Anastasia of 4/5M. In the senior section, Evan of 5W was the winner, with second position going to Liam of 6P. Students who placed 1^stand 2^ndin each division will progress to the next round.

The Premier's Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 as a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage with spelling. The competition is open to all government primary, central and community schools in NSW and comprises two divisions – Junior for Years 3-4 and Senior for Years 5-6. Regional Finals are held in various locations across NSW at the end of Term 3. Each year the State Final is held at the Eugene Goossens Hall, ABC Centre, Sydney, with the final half hour of the Senior Final broadcast live on ABC Local Radio. The competition attracts significant publicity through media and television coverage.

Selective High School Success

Congratulations to the 17 Connells Point Public School Year 6 students who have been offered placements at academically Selective High Schools in 2011! This is an outstanding result, with these positions highly prized and keenly sought.

Our congratulations, also, to three students who have been offered academic scholarships at other prestigious high schools. Again, this achievement is significant, as the places were based on the results of examinations attracting hundreds, if not thousands, of students from the government and non-govenment sectors.

We are very proud of our students and the success for which they, their parents and teachers have worked so hard. We wish them every success in their future learning.

Of course, many other highly talented students contributed to the success of their classmates by providing challenge and collaboration. While not all of these students are moving on to selective high schools, they will undoubtedly continue to be high achievers in whichever schools they attend. Well done, Year 6 2010!

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Congratulations to Anish in 1/2S, who is currently starring in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Opera House. This is what Anish wrote about his experience.

I went to the Sydney Opera House to perform an Opera. There were lots of people performing with me. The story was about a king and a queen and a little Indian Prince – that was me! There was Puck who steals me from the queen. King Oberon sends Puck and the two blue gopies to steal me. The pink gopies try to save me. But Puck is too clever. Queen Fatnia falls in love with a donkey. I got to light a matchstick and wear a turban. I love watching Thisbe jump around. I had to take a bow three times at the end. I enjoyed the show and made many new friends.

Jollybops Science Show

On March 25, 2010 there was a show called Jollybops. The hosts were the Jolly Wizard and a robot called Rusty the

Robot. The first thing we had to do was say "there he is". The Jolly wizard could not find him.

In the first experiment the Jolly Wizard put up a rubber glove. He kept it on and it got really big. Then Rusty put the glove

over his head. When the Jolly Wizard let go of it, it went in Rusty's face. They needed a volunteer. The robot chose two

Y3 students. Then he asked them their names. He said their names again in funny talk. They popped a balloon with fire.

After it popped a Kindergarten kid was crying and the teacher needed to take her out.

A couple of experiments later they had to have another volunteer. I put my hand and I got chosen to get wet. The Jolly

Wizard said "should it be 80mls up to 125 mls?". He said "we need a good seal". So Rusty made a seal noise three times.

I pointed to Rusty and the Jolly Wizard said "Don't be silly". He let go of it but it was gel and everybody said "yum".

Then another volunteer had to put food colour into magic water. It changed colour.

We all enjoyed the show very much.

Sydney Tower Excursion

On Monday the 15th of March, Year Six went on an excursion to Sydney Tower. Our first stop was Sydney Tower. We were split into two groups and took turns going to Oztrek and the observation deck. In Oztrek, we were all strapped into the hydraulic seats that were synchronised with a short video on Australia. As viewers, we actually felt that we were taking a journey across Australia's landscapes and landmarks. At the top of the tower, we looked through binoculars and saw Sydney's famous landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It was great. We were fortunate that the sky was clear allowing us to have the best views of the city. We all felt like tourists taking numerous photos of ourselves and the city. From Sydney Tower, we had a bird's eye view of the city.

Afterwards, we had lunch at the Royal Botanic Gardens. We walked through the gardens and onto the Sydney Opera House. We chatted with each other and looked out at the harbour. From the Opera House, you could see the Harbour Bridge. It was very picturesque. Our day was coming to an end. We packed up and walked back to our buses. Before we knew it, we had arrived back at school. It was definitely an unforgettable excursion to the city.

It's Academic Grand Champions

Congratulations to the 'It's Academic Team', who beat 26 other schools across Australia to win series 9 of the channel 7 television show. The grand final episode went to air on Friday 11th December 2009. As well as winning individual PSP's, the team won 8 Apple Macbooks and 6 Ipods for the school! We would like to congratulate the team, their families and teachers, on this amazing achievement.
